Tomato - Cherokee Purple

Tomato - Cherokee Purple

$3.00

These heirloom tomatoes, with their popular dusty-rose color, take approximately 80 days to mature and weigh around 12 ounces. They are known for their delightful sweetness. Many people believe that Cherokee Purple is the most delicious tomato available, and its purplish hue adds an intriguing touch. The organic Cherokee Purple tomato seeds are highly productive. Craig LeHoullier, a member of the Seed Savers Exchange, a PhD chemist, and a gardening enthusiast, received the seeds of Cherokee Purple by mail from J. D. Green, a resident of Tennessee. Mr. Green mentioned that his neighbor had acquired the seeds from Cherokee Indians in the region, who had developed and cultivated this particular variety for generations. Impressed by the purple tomatoes, LeHoullier sent them to Southern Exposure Seed Exchange and Johnny's Seeds. Both companies began commercial production of Cherokee Purple in 1991. Alongside the famous Brandywine tomatoes, Cherokee Purple played a significant role in popularizing old-fashioned heirloom tomato varieties.
